Who We Are

The Scorekeepers Union, formally organized in 2015, is a diverse collective of people with one unifying interest: the art of baseball scorekeeping. There are no membership requirements,  dues, or exclusions, and there never will be. If you like to keep score at a ballgame, you're in. Welcome!

We keep score as amateurs and professionals, from the Major Leagues down to grade-school ball. We love different teams and players, keep different books, score in different styles. We score in the park, and some of us even score the games at home on TV or radio. But, importantly, we strive to keep this a positive, judgment-free community. Respect and love your fellow scorekeepers at all times; you never know when someday they'll be the one to warn you that a foul ball is plummeting towards you while you're busy updating your RBI boxes.

As for us, your humble curator, organizer, and pamphleteer, who uses the first person plural mostly in homage to one of our blogger inspirations - we've been scoring games for about twenty years, and still have most of the cards. We grew up a Phillies fan, but time and baseball tragedy (some combination of the player's strike and Mitch Williams-related concerns) led us to take a break from the game. When we came back, we ended up a Nationals fan at the same time the team moved from Montreal to DC, and have been a strong, if perturbed, supporter ever since (don't ask us what happened after we finished inking our 2012 NLDS Game 5 card).

We score in pen and use the Eephus Halfliner. We have strong thoughts about the double switch. We have a loving partner who supports and indulges our hobby, and scores for us while we're out to the bathroom. (She does wish we'd make the effort to find a suitable shelf for our bobblehead collection, though, instead of just scattering them around our office.)

We can't take credit for inventing the name Scorekeepers Union; the earliest we've managed to find it used on Twitter was by friend of the Union @eddiesofficials, who has been very gracious and inclusive about the project. (It's also a tweak on the notion of a "goalkeeper's union," of course.) We didn't invent the Union; we're just some folks trying to bring its members together.
